Giving in over 50 Back,000 Miles and 3 Continents

Eleven years ago, A phone was obtained by me call that changed my entire life. A childhood buddy called asking easily wish to join her recently formed nonprofit because they traveled to Nepal on the first medical objective to perform overall joint reconstruction surgeries for the under-served.A WOGO patient lies upon a hosptial bed within a leg brace.

She said a storyteller was needed by them and a online marketer – after all, their knowledge was in joint substitute. I was a industry marketer at Cisco assisting our sales force tell the Cisco tale to their clients. And that’s just how I came across myself on the initial of several global missions to greatly help tell the tale of the non-profit, Females Orthopedic Global Outreach (WOGO).

On that initial trip this year 2010, I used a Cisco item called the Flip Digital camera (long gone, however, not forgotten) to movie the medical team doing his thing, and I was therefore pleased with the “film” I developed about our initial patient. While it had not been award worthy certainly, it was a short flavor in telling the group’s story within bite-sized clips to obtain people thinking about what we were doing – and I had been hooked. From our shared encounters as a group to the narratives of every patient and the amazing strengths in the feminine orthopedic surgeons that brought we – I couldn’t enough get!

Whenever we weren’t within surgery, we could actually explore the populous cities we were helping. During our visit to Nepal, the stunning Buddha Stoupa drew me to it every day and obtaining to go through the culture of this area still left me fascinated while I fell a lot more deeply in love with the objective of WOGO.

Shawn and something of the WOGO physicians, Dr. Hakanson, at the Monkey Temple in Nepal. After I came back from Nepal, I couldn’t cease discussing the trip and the continuing work we achieved – or how I acquired used so a lot of my day-to-time “Cisco abilities” with this medical objective! Yes, I utilized the web and social mass media to greatly help share our tale, but I had furthermore raised a fairly large amount of cash for the team also it felt great in order to help even more.

Since that right time, I’ve end up being the logistics and advertising lead for WOGO, managing WOGO’s social media marketing, vacation logistics, fund-raising and much more. I’ve traveled a lot more than 50,000 miles, to 3 continents within both hemispheres and a huge selection of knees have already been replaced. I’ve managed a united group of 64 people, moving them by way of a new town and keeping them joyful, capable and healthy to function hard with the hospitals we go to, all while increasing my career on Cisco.

Through Cisco’s volunteer hrs, Each year that i could take for these healthcare missions i receive 40 hrs of paid time. Having this time around enables me to toss myself in to the hard work of every mission knowing Cisco provides my back.

My ability to are a Senior Supervisor for Cisco&rsquo remotely; s Employee Communications group makes our healthcare missions easier also. On longer trips, I could work from the nationwide country we are situated in on our non-surgical days. I’ve led teaching meetings from Guatemala, participated within group meetings from Tanzania, and completed tradeshow plans during Cuba. The rhythm of function never skips a defeat when Cisco tech allows you to work from anywhere!

And Cisco’s global character ceases to surprise me personally, either.

During a mission in order to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic associated with Congo in 2016 we’d completed our surgeries intended for your day and decided in order to take a trip outside the city in order to the Lola Ya Bonobo Sanctuary to go to the Bonobo excellent apes. It was a lovely, crazy refuge for the apes once we hiked through the jungle to your viewing location.

And right there, within the jungles of Congo, my WOGO teammates started commenting how all of the social people all around us appeared to be wearing Cisco t-shirts. How strange!

Shawn and her peer Calvain Nangue smiling with among the Network Academy college students within the Congo. As I appeared around, We noticed it &ndash as well; there were a whole large amount of Cisco t-shirts surrounding me! I started inquiring queries, and lo’ and behold, each day faraway from their studies it had been an area Cisco Networking Academy that had taken. We were all thrilled to meet up each other and discuss Cisco and its own global footprint.

It was probably the most fun and unique items that has ever happened certainly to me. After all, who else can state, “While deep within the jungles of the Congo, I bumped into colleagues from my company?”

That’s a thing that I really feel can only just happen at Cisco.

Volunteering to get WOGO is a good joy in my own life and has resulted in many adventures, many fingers held, and several stories told. Being truly a right section of restoring flexibility to people to allow them to resume a life filled up with movement, community and work can be an incredible gift.

Working at Cisco, an organization that supports plus encourages employees to provide and go after their passions back, makes me really feel lucky incredibly. I really like where I function, and I can’t imagine myself else anyplace.
