GEEZ!!! vCenter is down today : now what????

Starting like a newbie in Vmware we all found know that vCenter Server provides a central platform for managing your vSphere environments which is our “Virtual Infra”, allowing us to automate plus deliver a virtual infrastructure safety also.

There we can conclude that will vCenter is a core component of the Virtual  Environment…..

What goes on when vCenter is down? What goes on with HA, DRS, FT, vDS, Clone Tempate, Snapshot etc? ‘

Interesting, yeah it was very interesting for me which made me personally build this scenario  in my laboratory and test it.

If vCenter becomes unavailable, I used to be not be able to make any adjustments to the cluster configuration but  all of your VMs will nevertheless run and  all of us you need to make any change to some VM, we have to log independently on each ESXi host is to do it from there – No not really from vCenter because it down right at this point: )

DRS (Distributed Resource scheduler)   will not work, because moving the particular VMs between hosts is a vCenter function.

Fault Tolerance (FT)   will continue to work for the configured VMs, but in case of a failover simply no new secondary will be created.
All the VMs that are linked to a  Distributed Switch (vDS)   will continue to possess network access, but you will not be capable of make any changes to vDS configuration.
Clone and Template won’t work i. e had not been able to clone a VM or even Deploy VM from Template.
vMotion or Storage vMotion was not work.
Now let us sum it up this:
No Impact:
1 . VM’s = Work,
2 . vSwitch continuous to operate and You can even make changes in order to vSwitch.
3. You can take a snapshot associated with VM by connecting to the Web host using vSphere Client
Limited functions operating:
four. HA will continue to work BUT you will not be capable to change the configuration
5. dvSwith Continues to function BUT you will not be able to change the settings
six. FT will continue to work for the configured VMs. However in case of a failover, simply no new Secondary will be created
Complete impact:
7. vMotion Will not function
7. DRS will not work
9. You will not be capable to Deploy vm from templates
10. You can not clone the VM

Hope this was informative for you ? Keep Learning….. Sharing…. Growing…..

With regards,
Sayed
